The partnership between Siemens Greece and the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Larissa (DEYAL) marked Siemens’ presence at this year’s IFAT, the world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste and raw material management. Through this flagship project, Siemens provides water and sewage facility / network management and rural area irrigation solutions, while Siemens’ high energy efficiency pumps and Industry 4.0 solutions have already led to significant energy savings and seepage loss reductions.
Siemens, a pioneer in water management solutions, welcomed IFAT visitors to its specially designed booth where new digital solutions and products that ensure sustainable water management were presented, using specialized sessions and interactive exhibits. This year, the central reference project of Siemens’ presence at IFAT was from Greece. In fact, Siemens’ pioneering partnership with DEYAL was presented at IFAT as a global example of successful cooperation aimed at supporting the upgrade of the technology used to manage the water network of an entire city by implementing the state-of the art digital water management solutions provided by Siemens. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of DEYAL and Mayor of Larisa with a delegation of DEYAL officials were present at Siemens’ booth at IFAT. They discussed with visitors, highlighting the benefits of the adoption of new digital solutions, including energy and cost savings as well as the rational use and management of water resources and underlined the importance of these elements for environment’s protection and for the improvement of the lives of Larissa’s residents.
DEYAL awarded Siemens this project following an international tender. The subject of the tender was the upgrading of DEYAL’s automation infrastructure to meet modern technological standards for safe and efficient operation and in particular the pumping, the transportation and the supply of potable water to approximately 250,000 city residents. Siemens has already completed the installation of a digital telemetry system covering the entire water supply network of the Municipality of Larissa, as well as smart solutions at the level of DEYAL’s irrigation wells. These interventions have enabled DEYAL to achieve significant energy savings and seepage loss reductions on its network.
Each farmer has been issued with a unique Simatic RFID card, which is used to track and report water use, improving, thus, the management of the 18 pumping stations that irrigate around 3,700 hectares of farmland. Irrigation water waste has stopped and there are significant energy savings thanks to the rational use of the wells, while at the same time, this system enables the protection of the water table.
Moreover, thanks to pumps equipped with high energy efficiency IE4 Simotics engines driven by Sinamics speed controllers, the efficiency of water management has been greatly improved. At the same time, Sitrans transmitters monitor drinking water supply, reservoir levels and water distribution network pressure, thus ensuring that Larissa residents enjoy safe, high-quality drinking water.
Siemens’ specially developed SIWA Optim software has enabled DEYAL to maximize the operational efficiency of its water pumps that currently operate 24/7, 365 days a year. This smart application takes into account water supply network architecture, demand, electricity tariff variations, pump availability and tank capacity, as well as pump operational status to calculate and determine the optimal pumping schedule at 24-hour intervals. Thanks to this powerful software, operators no longer have to worry about which is the most efficient pump to use or whether a tank is full enough or not. It is the sophisticated SIWA Optim algorithm that retrieves the latest data and adjusts pump operation so that they may respond even to unexpected incidents.
